5 creative ways to add your brand colours into your branding photoshoot if you love wearing black - featuring a brand shoot for the lovely Words by Bonnie

So you have a colourful brand that you are proud of and you are ready for some new brand photos, but you have a wardrobe full of black clothes and you’re not sure how to make it work.

Last year I did a brand photoshoot for the lovely Words by Bonnie, a Bristol based copywriter who specialising in working with small businesses.

Bonnie love love loves wearing black, and her branding is bursting with colour, featuring vibrant purple and turquoise.

In the past, she had felt the need to buy new clothes or wear colourful accessories to match her brand colours. This made her feel less like herself and brought up the challenge of how we could celebrate her brand, whilst celebrating her personal style.

There’s no need to buy new outfits and reinvent yourself. I’m a brand photographer based in Bristol UK, I’m here to help you feel true to yourself and prepare you for your brand photoshoot.

Here are my top tips on creative ways to add your brand colours into your branding photoshoot if you love wearing black.

1.        Use a backdrop for a large burst of colour

A photography backdrop sits behind you when you’re having your photos done within a photography studio.

Paper Backdrops

Colourful backgrounds can be created by a hanging paper roll background on a backdrop stand.

The good thing about using a paper roll backdrop is that you can literally roll them up and transport them.

The main limitation is the fact that they’re not very hard wearing so they easily crease or rip, plus they don’t come in custom colours. They are available in a range of colours and you can buy them online here

Custom MDF Backdrops

My personal preference when using a colourful background is to create custom painted boards, to match a client’s brand colours.

I have some large 8x4ft MDF boards that I use in my home studio. I’ve had them for years, and for each shoot I pop to B&Q to colour match paint to a client’s brand, and repaint the boards to best suit the shoot.

MDF boards are really hardwearing and they can be used to create a room feel.

Using a coloured background can really make your images pop and is a great way to whole heartedly embrace colour.

It can also work well to compliment your website design and provide lots of blank space for using text within Instagram stories.

2.        Colourful location

You can also incorporate your brand colours if you’re shooting on location, rather than in a studio.

Researching local cafes and workspaces that use similar colours to your brand colours, make a good alternative to colourful backdrops. When I was searching for turquoise locations for Bonnie’s brand shoot, I discovered Mokoko and Little Victiories (a pair of Bristol’s loveliest coffee shops) at Wapping Wharf.

Both of these were in walking distance of each other, visiting both meant that we had a bit of variety in the shots, so it didn’t look like all of Bonnie’s images were taken on the same day.

3.        Using a colourful mug

A portrait of you holding a mug is a very classic brand photo, that is widely used by lots of small businesses, to introduce the person behind the brand on their about page.

Holding a mug also helps my client’s to feel more comfortable in front of the camera…there’s something comforting about holding a mug, and it helps

A colourful mug can be a great way to reference brand colours, and make an image feel more personal and approachable.

4.        Using colourful props relevant to your services

Props are a great way to add context into your brand images, and express what you do.

For example, a copywriter might have a favourite colourful pen, keyboard or stationary that can be featured in some of the photos.

What props would you use?

5.        Showcasing your actual branding

Your branding might exist in physical form as businesses cards, on promotional objects such as water bottles, as well as digitally on your website.

These objects can be used within your brand images, to build on brand awareness.
