Client Spotlight - Molly Hawkins - Mural at Joe and The Juice

Welcome to this blog post series where I shine a spotlight on some recent client shoots.

Here’s a little insight into a recent photoshoot I did for Molly Hawkins, an amazing artist who creates colourful abstract murals.

Molly was looking for a Bristol interior photographer to capture a Mural commission that they had created for Joe and The Juice, a new juice cafe in Cabot Circus.

The brief

Molly wanted a range of images that were vibrant and really captured the mural’s colour, energy and location, for their online portfolio and socials.

After a quick chat on the phone to make sure I was a good fit for the project, I proposed the idea of doing a mix of overall and close up shots, as well as using long exposures to blur the busy footfall, and create the idea of movement.

Behind the scenes of the photoshoot

The shoot itself was a bit flexible.

I thought it would be best to photograph the mural on a cloudy day because it’s displayed behind a glass facade, and I wanted to minimise reflections. Molly wasn’t joining me, so it was really easy to wait for the right weather, before going ahead with the shoot.

My kit was made up of a Canon R5,  24-70mm lens, 70-200mm lens, remote switch and tripod.

Cabot Circus is made up of lots of different levels, and the larger zoom lens meant I could shoot from the other side of the floor, and capture tight shots of the front of the cafe head on.

I mounted my camera on a tripod for the wide shots because I wanted to capture the movement of people walking by. I always use a remote shutter when using slow shutter speeds, so that the camera doesn’t move when you take a photo.

I loved capturing the energy of the space and used some of the long exposure stills to create a stop motion to complement the gallery of images.

My favourite part of this shoot was standing in between the glass and the mural, shooting up at the artwork.

…there were some really cool angles, and I loved seeing the way the mural hugged the space.

After the shoot, I sent Molly a private gallery so they could pick their favourite for editing

This is something I offer for all of my interior clients, because it ensures I edit the images that will be of most use.

Every client is different, and their needs are different, so I make sure I include them at every stage so they can get the best out of the shoot.

Here’s a selection of the finished edits to show you the end result.

Molly now has a range of images and stop motions to update their website and socials.

It was a real joy capturing this space for Molly, and I will share another project we have photographed together soon.
